Sri Lanka: Political Pardon, Judicial Decisions, and Cultural Exchanges Mark a Busy Day
Sri Lanka witnessed a series of significant events today, including calls for a presidential pardon for a monk, judicial decisions on pardons and sentences, and cultural exchanges with India and China. The United National Party (UNP) has urged the government to grant a presidential pardon to Ven. Gnanasara Thera, citing his over 10-month imprisonment for contempt of court. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court nullified a presidential pardon granted to a man convicted of failing to pay maintenance to his wife, ruling it unconstitutional. In a separate case, two individuals were sentenced to 12 years in prison for illegal possession of explosives and detonators. Additionally, three Indian Navy training vessels arrived in Sri Lanka for a formal visit to strengthen bilateral defense ties, and a meeting between the Chinese Ambassador and the Minister of Buddhist Affairs and Cultural Affairs took place to discuss cultural and religious exchanges.
