Sri Lanka Investigates Tusker's Death and Denies Coal Link to Power Failure
The Sri Lankan government is conducting multiple investigations into the death of Kavanthissa, a tusker fatally injured in a shooting, while also rejecting claims that substandard coal caused a recent islandwide power failure. Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Nalinda Jayatissa announced that investigations are underway to determine any delays, lapses, or negligence in the elephant's treatment and to identify those responsible for the shooting. Separately, Jayatissa refuted opposition allegations that substandard coal contributed to the power failure, stating that the generator had been shut down for maintenance and that new coal shipments were used since September 4. Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the shooting, and investigations into the power failure are ongoing.
